‘Child Friendly Spaces’ set up for survivors
MANSEHRA: The World Vision International (WVI) has set up three ‘Child Friendly Spaces’ (CFS) near the earthquake-stricken Balakot in Mansehra district.
Sian Platt, the WVI child protection coordinator, said CFSs have been set up in village Bissian, Shohal Najaf Khan and Hassa, adding that WVI’s long-term plan in the earthquake-affected area focuses on children.
According to the United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF), the earthquake killed 17,000 children and affected another 1.6 million to 2.2 million. Ms Platt said children are the prime victims of the earthquake and needed shelter, protection, food, medical care and other necessities.
She said the earthquake children survivors were suffering from mental trauma after seeing their parents, classmates and relatives die in the quake. She said the Pakistan government sources claim that about 7,000 schools in North West Frontier Province were destroyed. Ms Platt said WVI has also planned to educate children at the CFSs. She said this is the time to build trust as the earthquake has paved a way through cultural barriers. She said WVI is encouraging children to make decisions on their own and most of them want to go back to schools. She said children in the CFS are learning basic hygiene practices and are given snacks. staff report
